Bio-Rad Sells Its Spectroscopy Business

HERCULES, CA, October 19, 2001 - Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc. (AMEX BIO.A and BIO.B) announced today the sale of its Spectroscopy business to Atropos Technologies, L.L.C. Atropos will acquire the former Cambridge, Massachusetts-based business specializing in sophisticated spectral imaging instruments, accessories and software, and assume the new name of Digilab L.L.C. This transaction follows Bio-Rad’s divestiture of its Semiconductor Measurements Division last year. Terms of the sale have not been disclosed.

“This sale is part of an overall strategy to strengthen our core businesses by focusing our resources in the life science and clinical diagnostics markets,” said Bio-Rad President David Schwartz. “It also provides the spectroscopy business with the resources and management it needs to thrive.”
